Serial Communications
13.1 Description
This chapter describes the serial communications feature of the Powerware
9315 Switchboard System Bypass Module (SSBM). Two serial communications
ports on the SSBM allow you to connect equipment to view
system event information.
The following sections describe the serial communications feature, and provide
information about connecting hardware, setting up the ports, changing settings,
and changing modes.
13.2 Locating the Communications P anel
The Customer Interface Panel inside the SSBM contains two serial communications
ports,oneDB---9andoneDB---25. Theportsprovideacomputerinterfacetoa
Remote Monitor Panel (RMP), Relay Interface Module (RIM), Supervisory Contact
Module (SCM), or remote terminal and/or printer. The Communications Panel also
contains terminals (TB1 thru TB7) for connecting your equipment to the SSBM.
Refer to drawings 164201373---4 and 164201373---13 in Appendix A for location of
the Customer Interface Panel inside the SSBM.
13.3 Connecting Equipment to a S erial Port
The SSBM is designed to accept a wide variety of Data Communication Equipment
(DCE) such as terminals, printers, and computers to each port. Set up the remote
equipment using the appropriate parameters for the mode you select. The
following section provides more information about configuration.
The cables you use for connection depend on the equipment you are connecting
to the SSBM. Cables should be no longer than 16m (50 ft). The connectors for
Port 1 and Port 2 on the Communications Panel in the SSBM are female, so the
cables into the SSBM should be male. Figure 13---1 shows the pin assignments for
Port 1, and Table 13---1 describes them. Figure 13---2 shows the pin assignments
for Port 2, and Table 13---2 describes them.
